Frustrations with Blade & Soul NEO

The crux of my experience with Blade & Soul NEO during this week’s adventure was far from enjoyable. I was essentially barred from entering a dungeon, and the one I managed to get into was crawling with bots.

This past weekend, I found myself searching for dungeon groups, hoping to join in on some action.

I scoured the party finder tool at various times, thinking I'd catch players eager to tackle the dungeons available to me—specifically Blackram Narrows and Plague Hollow.

However, I was met with disappointment.

Each time I checked, there seemed to be a lack of interest from other players in these dungeons.

On one rare occasion when a party was actually forming, I faced repeated rejections, which only added to my frustration.

Feeling a bit downcast, I remembered that I could venture into Blackram Narrows solo, a possibility I'd almost overlooked.

I decided to give it a shot, and to my surprise, I managed to enter and advance the storyline.

But what awaited me inside ultimately dampened my enthusiasm for the game.

After uncovering Namsoyoo's betrayal in the storyline, I turned my attention to Blackram to complete a few remaining quests. Upon entering the instance, I was immediately met with a horde of bots, mindlessly swarming and obliterating the enemies I needed for my objectives.

While I’m accustomed to encountering bots in MMORPGs, from minor nuisances to larger issues, the sheer volume of these identical characters darting along their set routes was particularly frustrating. It felt like a lack of genuine player engagement in Blade & Soul NEO, which might reflect the dwindling interest in the game in the West.

Ultimately, this overwhelming presence of bots soured my experience, compelling me to log off and reflect on my feelings before sharing them here.

I’ve been pondering the target audience for Blade & Soul NEO, and I’m still left in the dark.

It seems like the updated graphics and smoother gameplay might attract some returning players from the past, especially with the promise of future content.

However, I can’t help but question how many of these former players are out there.

It’s not that Blade & Soul is failing, but it doesn’t seem to have a strong demand for the NEO version.

Reflecting on my own thoughts about progression and classic servers in MMOs, I recall a conversation with Bree from MOP.

She made a poignant observation about EverQuest that resonates with my experience in NEO: “It was never the content; it was how they felt, and they want it back.”

I often find myself drawn to the latest and greatest games, much like a cat chasing after shiny objects, and I struggle to grasp the desire to return to an old title that once held significance.

Through the years of writing this column, I've only reinforced my stance on this matter.

Take Final Fantasy XI, my first real MMORPG; it no longer holds any appeal for me.

Similarly, I find it challenging to engage with City of Heroes: Homecoming, despite its official revival, because I feel as though I’ve moved on for good.

It's important to clarify that I'm not advocating for the elimination of specific gaming servers, nor do I hold any negative opinions about those who enjoy them. If engaging with these types of experiences brings you genuine happiness—unrelated to nostalgia for the past—then I wholeheartedly support your enjoyment. As for my own journey, I find it best to move forward. My experience has been filled with uncertainty, and my shoulders have felt the strain from frequently shrugging in response to the gameplay.
